An art gallerist receives a manuscript for a novel written by her ex-husband about a family whose road trip turns into a nightmare. The disturbing novel forces her to look back at their relationship, which ended in a dramatic break-up. Tom Ford's follow-up to A Single Man is another visually striking and unsettling drama where the past haunts the present. Whether the two parallel stories add up to a meaningful whole is a matter of opinion. Adams, Gyllenhaal, Shannon, and Taylor-Johnson all give very fine performances.
