After a methane explosion at his Greenland drilling site breaks off a massive ice shelf and sends it on its course towards Europe, powerful oil magnate Digger Rockwell faces a crisis that sets off a destructive chain of events. Alejandro González Iñárritu's scathing satire of the consequences of unchecked power, old white male entitlement, and the resulting environmental destruction is an original blend of Don't Look Up and Dr. Strangelove. The clever, beautifully constructed screenplay operates on at least three different levels, features several memorable set pieces, and boldly asks whether art has the power to change the world. Iñárritu's satire is sometimes very blunt, and some of the performances are very loud and exaggerated, although not without a reason. Tom Cruise, under heavy make-up, is terrific in the lead.
