Joe and Angela have grown distant due to unspoken resentments and misunderstandings. After another stressful day, Joe comes home to learn that Angela has invited their loud upstairs neighbors, Piña and Hawk, over for a dinner party. Olivia Wilde's third feature is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs, written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. This comedy-drama gets off to a slightly clunky start with heavy-handed use of symbolic mirrors accompanied by an obtrusive string score. However, once both couples get together, the film gradually finds its feet, moving seamlessly from poignant dramatic moments to hilarious comedy and back again. The evening takes various unexpected turns, and the four leads give terrific performances.
