Arthur and Eve, a long-married couple, separate after years of emotional distance. The divorce deeply upsets their three grown-up daughters and further destabilises Eve, who is already struggling with depression. Woody Allen follows the critical and commercial success of Annie Hall with his first dramatic film, which turns out to be a dry and dull chamber piece strongly influenced by his favourite director, Ingmar Bergman. The handsome-looking film deals with emotional repression and family tensions, but unfortunately Allen's pretentious characters with their first world problems never resemble living, breathing human beings.
