An unlikely romance blooms between Emmi and Ali, an elderly German cleaning woman and a much younger Moroccan migrant worker, who must not only address their own feelings but also those of everyone around them. One of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's most celebrated works is a minimalistic but delightfully warm and moving drama that deals with racism and societal prejudices in 1970s Germany. This well-acted film pays homage to Douglas Sirks's classic melodramas All That Heaven Allows and Imitation of Life.
