At Charlton Heston’s wish Orson Welles returned to Hollywood to direct one of the finest film noirs. He plays a thoroughly corrupt detective Hank Quinlan (one of nastiest creeps ever portrayed on film) who helps/hinders a Mexican official investigate a drug-related assassination on the border. Welles attracted a wonderful cast and he’s firing on all cylinders behind the camera, the infamous opening tracking shot is only the tip of the iceberg.
