A Mr. Ripleyesque drama about a retired tennis player who is determined to become a somebody. He gains wealth and rises above his state, but risks it all by falling in love with another woman. The story, which is set in London, is long and somber, a more cynical version of A Place in the Sun, if you will, but it kept me in its grip. However, it's hard to recognize Woody Allen's fingerprint in this chilly film.
