As Russia is transformed by revolution, Yuri, a physician and poet happily married to Tonya, falls in love with Lara, but both of his relationships are repeatedly disrupted by war and political turmoil. David Lean's epic and tragic romance takes its characters through the upheavals of World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the Civil War. The scale and the running time of this historical drama are on a similarly epic level to Lean's previous film, Lawrence of Arabia, but the impact is not quite the same. However, the characters are delightfully complex and the story is consistently captivating. Adapted from Boris Pasternak's 1957 novel, which was banned in the Soviet Union. An Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Score.
