A newspaper reporter living on Staten Island is convinced she witnessed the brutal murder of a man in the apartment across from hers. The apartment is occupied by a French-Canadian model with a disturbing secret. Brian De Palma's weird and often wonderful psychological horror film is once again heavily influenced by the films of Alfred Hitchcock, particularly Rear Window, Rope, and Psycho. However, De Palma takes this disturbing story of trauma and psychological manipulation to places where Hitchcock wouldn't dare to go. There are some terrific split-screen sequences on the way there. Remade in 2006 by Douglas Buck.
