Emily Brontë's 1847 gothic romance novel has been adapted for the screen countless times, most recently in 2011 by Andrea Arnold. Emerald Fennell's very loose adaptation once again chronicles the passionate but destructive relationship between the orphan Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw on the Yorkshire moors. Fennell strips away the complexities of the novel to focus primarily on the romance, but the result is a dull and over-stylised film in which Cathy and Heathcliff never fully come alive as characters. It does not help that Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are really, really, ridiculously good looking for their parts. The songs by Charli XCX do not exactly add to the sense of authenticity either.
