A talented barrister jeopardises his career and marriage when he becomes infatuated with his client, a beautiful Italian woman accused of poisoning her blind husband. Alfred Hitchcock's follow-up to Notorious had a troubled gestation and producer David O. Selznick supervised its final cut. The end result is a dull and forgettable, romantically flavoured court drama. Knowing the Hays Code, the outcome of the plot is a foregone conclusion. Based on a 1933 novel by Robert Smythe Hichens.
