In an oppressive dystopian future, citizens are kept under surveillance and sedated with drugs to suppress their emotions and individuality. THX 1138, a factory worker, begins to rebel after stopping his medication. George Lucas' feature debut is a peculiar and experimental science fiction film, a far cry from his follow-up, Star Wars. The screenplay by George Lucas and Walter Murch, which is based on a 1967 short Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, is minimalistic and not always particularly captivating, but visually the film is rich and inventive.
