In a post-apocalyptic retro-futuristic world where food (and meat in particular) is scarce, a ruthless butcher uses his delicatessen as a front for a grim meat source. Trouble looms for the new tenant who falls for the butcher's daughter. Jean-Pierre Jeunet (and Marc Caro's) feature debut is a highly original and visually inventive dark comedy. The film, which is entirely shot on a sound stage, combines clever gadgets, practical effects, vivid colour palette, sound design, and music into a zany but memorable whole.
