British officer Clive Candy's experiences from the Boer War up to World War II have shaped his understanding of honour, love, and friendship. His story is told through a series of flashbacks, which reveal the impact of war on his personal and professional life. This epic and romantically flavoured drama by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger has been hailed as one of the best English films of all time. Although the story is beautifully told and well-acted, its point is somewhat lost on me. I think that after 163 minutes, it should all make sense.
