A nurse named Alma is assigned to care for Elisabet Vogler, an actress who has stopped speaking. The two women live alone in a secluded beach house, where their relationship gets so intense that their identities begin to blur. Ingmar Bergman's subtle, highly original, and visually stylish psychological drama offers more questions than answers. You can try to figure them out or just let it all wash over you and enjoy it. The performances by Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullmann couldn't be more different, but they are both excellent.
