Krzysztof Kieślowski expanded the fifth episode of his Dekalog TV series into this short feature film. It examines the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" through the intersecting lives of a young drifter who brutally murders a taxi driver and an idealistic lawyer tasked with defending him. Kieślowski's drama is a grim portrayal of violence and its repercussions, and a stark condemnation of capital punishment. The grimy visual look, which employs colour filters and murky iris shots, is an acquired taste.
