In the late 1920s, an idealistic young playwright secures financial backing for his new Broadway play by offering a role to a gangster’s untalented girlfriend. Surprisingly, her bodyguard ends up having more influence on the final production than she does. Woody Allen’s comedy takes its sweet time to get going, but it turns out to be an enjoyable exploration of artistic integrity, creative compromise, and personal ambition. Dianne Wiest won an Academy Award for her hilarious portrayal of an acting diva.
