While Raimunda and her teenage daughter are trying to cope with a traumatic event, Raimunda's divorced sister is visited by their dead mother. Pedro Almodóvar's excellent melodrama has some twists in store, as the central women must confront family secrets, unresolved issues, and repressed trauma. This is a glorified soap opera really, but always enthralling and often deeply moving. Penélope Cruz looks glorious and also gives a terrific performance.
