Travis emerges from the Texas desert, unwilling to explain where he has been for four years. He slowly reconnects with his young son Hunter, who has been raised by Travis' brother and his wife, and the two eventually set out to find the boy's mother, Jane. Wim Wenders' slow-paced but hypnotic drama, based on a screenplay by Sam Shepard, tells a moving story of a broken man who must confront the choices that led to the breakdown of his family. Harry Dean Stanton is excellent in a rare starring role. The film is memorable for Robby Müller's beautiful cinematography and Ry Cooder's evocative slide-guitar score.
