Jean-Pierre Jeunet's follow-up to Amélie is strikingly similar in style (the romantic main story is sprinkled with charming little vignettes and inventive visual flourishes), but this time the story is quite a bit darker. Audrey Tautou plays a young woman who refuses to believe that her fiancé died in the trenches of World War I. Although the film doesn't have a dull moment, it is a bit long and sometimes exhaustingly overfilled with visual details. Adapted from Sebastien Japrisot's 1991 novel.
